In Brazil, international co-productions involving a Brazilian producer can qualify as Brazilian in one of two ways:
With regard to treaty co-productions, the requirements set out in the treaty concerned are to be met.
Brazil has co-production treaties with: Argentina, Canada (English version / French version), Chile, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and
Brazil is also signatory to the Latin American Film Co-Production Treaty. Current parties to this treaty, besides Brazil, are: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The Brazilian legislation establishes that in cases where there is no official co-production treaty, the co-production project concerned can have national status in Brazil provided that the Brazilian co-producer owns at least 40% of the rights to the film and at least 2/3 of the cast and crew have Brazilian citizenship or have been Brazilian residents for 3 years or more.
